How it all started...
Word of Faith Temple of Jesus Christ began many years ago in the mind of God, but was manifested over 28 years ago in the heart and mind of Pastor Edward Bonner. New Holy Cross Apostolic Church where the late Bishop E. Shock was Pastor is where the promotions began. Brother Bonner at this time served many auxiliaries such as the Deacon board, the board of trustees, and even a small stint in the choir.
It was through his faithfulness and servitude he received his promotion to minister Edward Bonner. Minister Edward Bonner stayed humble, served faithfully under the tutelage of Bishop E. Shock until God’s appointed time where he was elevated to Pastor Bonner. It was then that Pastor Bonner along by his side was Minister and First Lady Better Bonner birthed the Word of Faith temple of Jesus Christ in November of 1985. One of Pastor Bonner’s favorite scriptures is 1 Peter 5:5-6 5 “Likewise, ye younger, submit yourselves unto the elder. Yea, all of you be subject one to another, and be clothed with humility: for God resisteth the proud, and giveth grace to the humble. 6 Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in due time.” The first services were held in a small rented building on East Grand Boulevard. The second location on Gratiot and Belvidere and one of the largest facilities was located on Belvidere and Canfield.
It was in this location where the renound Word of Faith Temple of Jesus Christ choir was birthed and began to minister all over the Detroit Metropolitan area where they sang with the anointing, people lives being uplifted and God being glorified. The fourth location at 10250 Mack Avenue was the last and final location that Pastor and First Lady Bonner said, “No more renting, ownership is our next step.” It was then that they came across 13432 E. McNichols roots went down and ownership sprouted up. The ministry continued through each move teaching, preaching, developing the people of God in stewardship, kingdom connection, servitude and having the mind of Christ. Pastor Edward and Minister Betty Bonner has always had a heart for people because they believed that if we want what Jesus received then we have to do what he did.
Pastor Edward and Minister Betty Bonner raised three sons and three daughters of which Pastors, ministers and three churches were birthed through their faithfulness to the gospel of reconciliation. In June of 2005 Pastor Bonner was elevated to the office of Bishop Bonner, where he continued to birth outreach ministries that reach the senior citizens apartments, convalescent homes just to name a few. This ministry he called the “Emergency Room Free Will Fellowship” (where the sick get seen and they are healed.) This is over 28+ years Bishop Edward and Minister Betty Bonner served the people of God with consistency, with joy, out of love, with faith and on purpose. These faithful years of service I am proud to call them, “God’s General’s”. It is with great honor that we recognize and honor them for the legacy in which they deposited in all, and the torch they passed on.
